Low Carb Protein Bars

Low carb protein bars can be a useful addition to any keto diet, especially if you travel or need lunches for work. It can be challenging on a vegan keto diet, but, this is where Pegan protein bars come in!

With all the debate going on about vegans and protein, these bars go some way to bridging that gap. (Check out this article for guidelines).

This is the manufacturer’s description:

There are other flavors but I haven’t tried them, I’ve only tried the chocolate Pegan protein bar because they seemed to be the most popular!

Vegan protein bars –

-can be a challenge to find, especially low carb protein bars. Yes, you can make your own but not everyone has the time or the inclination to do this! If you do want to give try making your own vegan protein bars, Liz over at meat free keto has a tasty recipe which I can recommend.

So, on to the Pegan Protein Bar – Chocolate Lava

They are expensive, there are no 2 ways about it. If you’re on a tight budget, check out the link I gave above to make your own. Depending on where you buy, they are between $29.99 and $39.99 for 12 bars.

There are 2 ways you can eat these, the instructions say to heat up for 10 seconds but, I don’t use a microwave. I tried one first straight from the wrapper.

  • Texture = gooey (when heated) and chewy is the only way I can describe them. Once you take a bite, then they start to melt in your mouth
  • Taste = you expect them to taste really chocolatey but they don’t, nor are they very sweet. If you’re looking for a replacement chocolate bar, forget these! There is a hint of chocolate taste in there along with a flavor I haven’t experienced before. I’m assuming this is the probiotic coming through.

Forget any preconceived ideas about how you think the Pegan protein bars will taste!

  • Aftertaste = yes, there is an aftertaste, it’s not unpleasant and lingers for quite a while, a bit like strong black coffee or very dark chocolate.

low carb protein barsThey are very filling, half a bar was plenty for me so I can make these last. Interestingly, my Granddaughter LOVED them. Not melted, just straight from the packet.

I guess at that age they don’t have preconceived ideas about how things should taste. She also doesn’t have a sugary diet, healthy and mostly vegan.

Verdict

If you’re looking for low carb protein bars which are also vegan then yes, I would recommend the Chocolate Lava protein bar. If I have half a bar in one sitting then I can make these last the month!

I’ll update this article when I’ve tried the other vegan protein bars in the Pegan range.
